Saving on groceries in South Carolina
Updated October 2026
From Fort Mill and Rock Hill to Greenville, Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina families have good grocery options and one nice advantage: groceries aren't charged state sales tax.
Grocery tax in South Carolina
Unprepared food, the groceries you take home to cook, is exempt from South Carolina's state sales tax. Prepared food and meals are taxed.
Know your local chains
You'll find Publix, Food Lion, Lowes Foods, Harris Teeter, Aldi, Lidl, Walmart and Ingles across the state, plus Piggly Wiggly, especially in the Lowcountry and the Midlands. Most use free loyalty programs with digital coupons, so sign up at the one or two stores you actually shop.
- Compare your real list. A store can be cheap on milk and expensive on everything else. Your usual list is what counts.
- Check the unit price. The price per ounce or per pound on the shelf tag shows which size is really the better deal.
- Cook more of the week. With no state tax on groceries, cooking at home saves even more compared with prepared and restaurant food.
- Keep your receipts. A receipt shows what you actually paid, which is the best way to spot a price creeping up.
Healthy Bucks for SNAP shoppers
South Carolina's Healthy Bucks program helps SNAP households buy more fresh produce. When you spend at least $5 in SNAP benefits on fruits and vegetables at a participating farmer or market, you get $15 in Healthy Bucks to spend on more produce. Find participating vendors on the SC Department of Social Services site. Since August 31, 2026, SNAP in South Carolina can no longer be used for candy, energy drinks, sugary soft drinks and other sweetened drinks (diet and zero-sugar drinks still count).
How GroceryGret helps
GroceryGret is being tested in South Carolina now. It compares your family's whole list at the stores near you, using prices from receipts shoppers choose to share and stores' own sale emails, and keeps your whole household on one shared list. Prices grow one store at a time as people share receipts, so some stores may have few or no prices yet.
