About GroceryGret

A grocery list that knows what your family needs, and where that list costs less near home.

Why GroceryGret exists

In a lot of families, the grocery list lives in pieces: a note on one phone, a text thread, something on the fridge. Whoever ends up at the store is working from part of it.

Then there's the price question. The same groceries can cost noticeably different amounts at stores a few miles apart, but a sale on one item doesn't tell you what your whole list costs. Most of us shop where we always shop, without knowing whether moving the trip would actually save anything.

GroceryGret is being built to put those two things together: one shared list, and real local prices for that exact list.

What GroceryGret does

  • A shared household list. Everyone in the family joins one grocery list from their own phone. Anyone can add to it, and items checked off in the store disappear from everyone's list within seconds.
  • Local prices from real receipts. Store prices come from receipts that families choose to share. Nothing is estimated or made up, and older prices are marked so you can see how fresh they are. An item's details can also show prices shoppers reported to the public Open Prices database, labeled as such.
  • Your list, compared by store. GroceryGret prices your list at stores near home and shows which one costs the least for what you're buying, and how many of your items each store has a price for.
  • Receipt scanning. Snap a receipt, or upload a photo, PDF or e-receipt link. Our own reader checks each line against the receipt's totals before anything is saved.
  • Recipes and your kitchen. Photograph a recipe, or your fridge and pantry, and what you need lands on the list. Saved lists like Thanksgiving stay ready for next time.
  • Savings you can check. Savings are counted from your own verified receipts, and you earn points for the prices you share.

Store sales aren't in the app yet. We're working on bringing in weekly sales from the stores' own promotions, and they'll appear only where we can show them accurately. See how it works for a family's week with the app.

Built in Charlotte

GroceryGret is based in Charlotte, North Carolina, and is being developed and tested first in North and South Carolina, with Charlotte as its home market.

Because prices come from shared receipts, coverage grows one store at a time, starting here. The shared list works anywhere, but outside the Carolinas you may see few or no prices for your stores for now. We'd rather show a gap than a guess.

Why we're building GroceryGret

GroceryGret started with a simple problem: families shouldn't have to juggle separate grocery lists, receipts, store apps and price information just to figure out what they need and where it may cost less.

We're building GroceryGret to bring those pieces together. One shared grocery list keeps the household organized, while real shopping data helps build better local price information over time.

We're starting in North and South Carolina, with Charlotte as our home market. The goal is to build carefully, learn from early testers, improve local price coverage, and create something families genuinely find useful.

What we're building toward

The more receipts families share, the more complete and current the local price picture becomes. The goal is simple: help families make better grocery decisions with useful local information, in a way that respects their privacy. We never sell personal information, and shared prices are combined and anonymized. Read the privacy policy.
