Privacy Policy

GroceryGret ("we", "us") makes the GroceryGret iPhone app. This policy explains what the app collects, why, who it's shared with, and the choices you have. We wrote it in plain language on purpose. If anything is unclear, email privacy@grocerygret.com.

The short version. Your list and receipt photos stay on your phone. Receipt prices are shared only if you turn sharing on. We never collect your name, email, exact location or card numbers without you choosing to give them, and you can delete everything from Settings in the app.

What stays on your phone

  • Your grocery list. If you join a family list, it's shared only with the people who have your family code, through our server.
  • Receipt photos. The app reads the text on your phone. Photos are never uploaded.
  • Your savings history and settings.

What is sent to our server, and why

  • Your ZIP code, to find stores and prices near you. It isn't stored with your name.
  • Receipt text. When you scan a receipt, the text read from it (not the photo) is sent to our server so our receipt reader can check it and find the store. It's checked and not stored. The store's ZIP code from the receipt (or yours, if the receipt has none) is used to look up that store's location.
  • Item names or barcodes when you open an item, to look up nutrition and product facts.
  • Family list items, if you start or join a family list, along with the first name you choose so your family knows who added what.
  • Feedback you send: your message, the name and email you choose to include, your ZIP area (like 282) and the app version. Used only to answer you and improve the app.

Recipe and fridge photos

These are the only photos that leave your phone. When you use Scan a recipe or Scan fridge, the photo is sent to our AI provider, Anthropic, to read the ingredients or identify items. It isn't stored or shared by us, and it isn't used to identify you.

Receipt price sharing (off until you turn it on)

If you turn on sharing, each receipt you save shares:

  • Store name, the store number printed on the receipt, and the purchase date and time
  • The first three digits of your ZIP code, like 282
  • Each item, the price you paid, and the store's item number when the receipt shows one
  • Whether you bought in the store or through Instacart
  • A random ID for your phone, used to stop duplicate uploads and to delete your data if you ask

Never shared: your name, email, phone number, full address, exact location, card numbers or receipt photos.

How shared prices are used: to show real prices to families shopping near you, to compare stores, and to build reports that combine many shoppers' prices. We may sell or license these combined, anonymized reports. They never include your name, contact details or your phone's ID.

Each receipt counts once no matter who uploads it, receipts must be from the last 30 days, and shared prices stop showing to other families after 60 days.

Crash and problem reports

If the app crashes or freezes, a report is sent with the kind of crash, where in the app's code it happened, the screens opened just before, the app and iOS version, and the phone model. If a receipt doesn't add up, a note with the store and totals is sent; when sharing is on it also includes the lines the app couldn't read, with long numbers like card and member numbers hidden. Reports never include your list, prices, name, email or location, are used only to fix the app, and are never sold. You can turn them off in Settings.

Services we use

  • Cloudflare runs our server and database.
  • Anthropic reads recipe and fridge photos (see above).
  • Kroger and Walmart developer services provide live prices. Our server asks them for prices near your ZIP code. Nothing about you is sent.
  • Open Food Facts, Open Prices and USDA FoodData Central provide product facts, nutrition and reported prices. Nothing about you is sent. Open Food Facts and Open Prices data are available under the Open Database License.
  • OpenStreetMap helps match a receipt to the right store location, using the store's ZIP code only.
  • Apple Maps finds grocery stores near the location you set, on your phone.

We don't use advertising trackers, we don't sell your personal information, and we don't track you across other apps or websites.

Your choices

  • Turn receipt sharing off in Settings. Receipts you scan after that stay on your phone.
  • Delete my shared receipts in Settings removes everything your phone shared.
  • Delete all my data in Settings erases your list, receipts, savings and settings on your phone, plus everything our server has from your phone. Your family keeps its shared list.
  • Deleting the app doesn't delete what you already shared, so use Delete all my data first, or email us.
  • You can ask us what we have about you, or ask us to delete it, at privacy@grocerygret.com.

Security

Everything between the app and our server travels over encrypted connections. We keep as little as we can, and only as long as we need it.

Children

GroceryGret is meant for adults and families managed by adults. It isn't directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their personal information.

Changes

If we change what's shared, we'll update this page and ask you again in the app before sharing anything new.
