Saving on groceries in Charlotte

Updated October 2026

Charlotte might be one of the best cities in the country to shop around for groceries. Harris Teeter started in Matthews, Food Lion is up the road in Salisbury, Lowes Foods is from Winston-Salem, and Publix, Aldi, Lidl, Walmart, Costco, Trader Joe's and Compare Foods are all here too. Most of us have three or four of them within a short drive. That competition is your advantage, if you use it.

Use the competition

  1. Know which two stores are closest. Pick the two you'd actually drive to. Comparing ten stores is a hobby. Comparing two is a habit.
  2. Compare your usual list, not the ad. A store's front-page deals are chosen to get you in the door. What matters is what your regular list costs there.
  3. Split by category if it's worth it. Some families buy staples at one store and produce or meat at another. Only do it if both stores are already on your way.
  4. Sign up for the free loyalty programs. Most Charlotte chains put their best prices behind a free card or app with digital coupons. It's worth it for the stores you actually use.

What you pay in tax

In North Carolina, groceries aren't charged the full sales tax. Food you cook at home is taxed at 2%, while prepared food, like a hot rotisserie chicken or the deli's ready-made meals, is taxed at the full rate of around 7.25% in Mecklenburg County. If you're comparing a ready-made meal with cooking it yourself, that difference adds up.

Local and fresh

The Charlotte Regional Farmers Market on Yorkmont Road is open several days a week most of the year, and in season it can beat grocery store prices on produce. Check the hours on the NC Department of Agriculture's site before you go. Matthews Community Farmers Market runs on Saturdays in season.

If money's tight right now

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina works with food pantries across the Charlotte area, and you can call 211 to find one near you. If you qualify, North Carolina's food assistance program (called Food and Nutrition Services, or FNS) can be used at nearly every grocery store in town.

How GroceryGret helps in Charlotte

GroceryGret was built here. It adds up your whole family list at the Charlotte stores near you, using prices from receipts local shoppers choose to share and the sale prices stores send in their own emails. Your family adds to one shared list, and whoever is at the store sees it live.

Try it

GroceryGret is free and in beta testing on iPhone. Join the beta and you'll get the install link right away. More guides: all how-to guides.
